A young girl was rushed to hospital after almost drowning in a public swimming pool.

The eight-year-old was swimming at Becontree Heath Leisure Centre in Althorne Way, Dagenham, when she got into difficulties at about 4.20pm on Saturday.

Pool staff gave her CPR before paramedics arrived and took the girl and her mum to Queen’s Hospital in Romford as a priority.

Gwen Reynolds, who witnessed the incident from the public gallery, said: “We saw the pool attendants pull her out of the water and give her CPR. It seem to go on for quite some time.”

A spokesman for the council said: “Staff were immediately on hand to assist her [the girl] in the presence of her mother while the ambulance crew arrived.”
