A new wedding venue and banqueting hall catering for up to 300 people is set to be built in Barking.

Planning permission was granted for a purpose-built 1,758m² hall in Abbey Wharf Industrial Estate in Kingsbridge Road at a Barking and Dagenham Council development control board last week.

Set to feature 96 car parking spaces and 32 cycle spaces, the facility will cater mainly for weddings typically on Thursday and Friday evenings and weekends, with only limited use mid week.

At peak times 25 staff could be employed to deal with up to 300 customers.

Although agreed by members on last Monday, the plans actually go against the council’s own “local plan” as it proposes a function hall on designated employment land.

However, borough officers believe the application “adequately demonstrates” that the site is unlikely to be developed for more traditional employment uses in the short and medium term.

A spokesman for Barking and Dagenham Council said: “There is a strong demand for such facilities in the borough and the new banqueting suite will make good use of a long vacant industrial site.

“It will create new jobs and help improve the appearance of the area.”
