STUDENTS at Plashet School have found an unusual way to keep warm outside this winter.

All students and staff now have use of an outdoor gym at the school in East Ham thanks to a grant of almost 8,000 from NHS Newham.

The school in Plashet Grove, received the funding as they could not provide the two hours of physical education the Government recommends, and made up the rest.

The gym boasts 14 machines, many of which can be used by two students at a time, and all are suitable for students from 11 years.

But every pupil has to complete an induction so they can know how to use the machines properly and the new way of working out is proving popular with the students.

Year 11 student and Newham sports ambassador Thugitha Premathasan said: "The gym is a very good way to improve participation."

"It's a great way to exercise", added Year 9 pupil Isma Akhtar. "It's fun and sociable and contributes to a healthy lifestyle.
