The first team coach for West Ham’s ladies team will officially open a new gym tomorrow.

Karen Ray will be cutting the ribbon to launch Barking and Dagenham College’s new gym, which has had a £47,000 makeover, at the Rush Green campus.

The opening of the Dagenham Road fitness hub follows a partnership with West Ham United Football Club which helped deliver a community football programme for boys last year, with this year’s plans including recruiting a girl’s academy team and encouraging more young women into the sport.

Midfielder Karen, who will act as a role model for the academy, is very keen to encourage women to go to the gym to help them get active and stay fit and healthy.

The gym will be open to the public as well as to students of the college.

Commercial manager Sue Simmons said: “The college is in a great location, with ample parking outside of peak hours, and great access via public transport.

“We offer a friendly and relaxing environment with options to suit all. We run classes and activities throughout the year from yoga to bootcamp and always open to new ideas, too.”

Karen will be joined by Dagenham and Redbridge players Paul Benson and Craig Robson at the opening.

Membership prices vary and start from £14.99 a month. Call 020 3667 0147 for more information.
