Without stepping outside the borough, four friends have walked from Barking to Barcelona, or rather the equivalent distance.

Sylvia Sielicka, Shormin Begum, Erum Rashid, and Yasmin Sattar make up the Street Tag team, Al Noor, having met through their children’s Al Noor Primary School in Chadwell Heath.

Winning the Barking and Dagenham Council’s game is not nearly enough for Al Noor. They are taking it to new extremes, racing between the QR codes dotted around the area and scanning them with their mobile phones.

Yasmin, of Freshwell Avenue, Chadwell Heath, said: “We are really competitive and we been out in all weathers- even when it was minus two were picking up points.”

Shormin, of Mordon Road, Goodmayes, added: “We have continued to surprise ourselves with how far we have walked.”

The more locations scanned, the more points collected and Al Noor are way ahead of the game, having racked up an impressive 80,000 points so far.

Cllr Maureen Worby, cabinet member for social care and health integration, said: “The game has always been about showing you don’t need an expensive gym membership to get fit”

Al Noor’s original plan was to cover the distance between London and Edinburgh. But Sylvia Sielicka, of Langdale Close, Dagenham, said, “once we worked out how far we had all walked, we realised we had already beaten that target!”

Sylvia has been completing the challenge with her two-year-old daughter Camila and Erum, of Abercorn Gardens, Chadwell Heath, is earning those points with her two-year-old son, Suleiman.

Erum said: “It has been a wonderful initiative to get to know people in the area and speak to different people. It really has shown what a friendly neighbourhood there is.”

Al Noor have set the ambitious target of covering 1,000 miles and raising £10,000 for Human Aid UK. The money will go towards building a centre that will help Rohingya refuges caught up in the Myanmar conflict, providing basic healthcare, psychological support and education.

The team are hoping to be crowned champions of Street Tag, which finished on Sunday.
