Free HIV testing and condoms will be available on Tuesday to mark World AIDS day.

Barking and Dagenham Council has partnered with BHRUT hospitals, Pride and Outpatients East for the sessions which will be held at the Technical Skills Centre in Short Blue Place, Barking, from 10am to 4pm.

An increasing number of residents have been diagnosed with HIV and the rate is above the London average and nearly three times the England average.

Cllr Maureen Worby. cabinet member for adult social care and health, said: “We want people to access early testing and it is important to raise awareness of the services that are available in the borough.”

More than 25,000 people living in UK are unaware that they are affected. This can affect their long-term health and mean that they are unknowingly passing it on to others.
