The Met Office has issued a heatwave alert for London this weekend, with temperatures expected to soar to a sizzling 31C tomorrow.

A level two alert has been issued, which is triggered when there is 60 per cent chance of temperatures being high enough to have a significant effect on health.

Even if temperature do not hit ‘extreme’ levels, Public Health England has issued advice to people to stay safe in the sun.

Recommendations include staying out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, drinking lots of cool drinks, wearing sunscreen and looking out for vulnerable people such as the elderly and very young.

Dr Yvonne Doyle, regional director for PHE London, said: “Lots of Londoners are going to enjoy the hot weather over the next few days, and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the sunshine, but high temperatures can be dangerous, especially for people who may be particularly vulnerable such as older people, young children and those with serious illnesses.”
