Research into the effectiveness of a council-led health project is being undertaken by a university professor.
Professor Mark McDermott from the School of Pyschology at the University of East London (UEL) will evaluate the 12-week exercise referral programme called Active Sport 4 Life, which is run by Barking and Dagenham Council, over three years.
He has been awarded £45,000 to act as an external advisor and evaluate the added benefits to people’s health and quality of life by through participation in sport.
“The project aims to evaluate the effect of incorporating a sport element into the exercise referral scheme for people with a variety of medical complaints,” said Professor McDermott.
A programme of activities will be provided by local sport clubs. Funding for the council programme is also provided by Sport England.
