EAGER shoppers packed themselves into the brand new Tesco Express store in the Heathway after its grand opening.

The long-awaited store opened its doors on Friday, February 15, and was immediately filled to the brim with customers, some of which had to queue out of the door.

The opening is another step in the right direction for the Heathway which suffered from losing major stores such as Sainsbury's and WH Smith.

Mayor Fred Barns cut the ribbon to open the store and said he was thrilled it was finally here.

He said: "I think if you ask the people of this borough they would tell you that a store like this is well overdue on the Heathway.

"There has been a lot of work behind getting this here and I think it's great that we finally have it.

"It will be a great resource and hopefully it will encourage more businesses to come to the area."
