Barking and Dagenham Council hosted a special flag-raising ceremony to celebrate the 72nd Indian Independence Day before a celebratory event for all the community yesterday.
Councillor Darren Rodwell, council leader, led proceedings as the flag was raised outside the town hall followed by speeches, the national anthem, and dancing.
He said: “We should be very proud that we hold a long history with India and it was another special moment for us to raise the flag outside the Town Hall.
“One of the most influential world leaders has a special relationship with Barking and Dagenham.
“Mahatma Gandhi was our guest on his walk for independence, and actually stayed in Kingsley Hall, in Dagenham.
“We should never forget that such an inspiring individual thought this borough was important that he came here and asked for our support in his drive for independence.
“We hope to continue this special relationship for many years to come.”
