Want to hide that 80s perm you rocked or keep that Bart Simpson jacket a secret?

Now’s the time to have a word with your family, because a film project encouraging residents to donate home videos is coming to the borough.

London: A Bigger Picture is a three year project from Film London’s Screen Archives.

Historic films from the area - including footage which has remained unseen for sixty years - will be on show.

You’re invited to search and donate films showing life in Barking and Dagenham, from birthday parties to days out to footage of people in their homes, all to be shared with future generations.

The project will visit Valence House in Becontree Avenue, Dagenham, on Thursday, December 11, and free screenings of films from Barking Local Studies and Archives will be shown.

Councillor Darren Rodwell, leader of Barking and Dagenham council, said he’s proud of the borough’s rich heritage, adding: “It never ceases to inspire me. I would urge residents to get involved and help us preserve that history.”

The programme will also feature gems from other film archives across the city – reflecting the cultural heritage of London’s outer boroughs.

London’s screen archives film archivist, Louise Pankhurst, will introduce the films alongside local studies experts. They will explain how they fit into Barking and Dagenham’s history and reveal more about the rich past they represent.
