A day that was once filled with sadness at the death of a loved one has been transformed into a joyful memory.

Ilya-Rose Maycey was born at 12.02am on New Year’s Day to the delight of her parents Laura Day, 32, and Stuart Maycey, 36, who lived in Dagenham Heathway before moving to Elm Park recently.

Born at 6lb 5oz, Ilya was the very first arrival of 2017 at Queen’s Hospital in Romford, on the anniversary of the death of her paternal grandad, David Maycey, 12 years ago.

“My due date was the sixth but I had a funny feeling that she would be born on New Year’s Day,” Laura, who is also mum to Chelsea, 14, and Deanna, eight, said. “Stuart is over the moon that we can now remember the day for something positive, her grandad would have wanted it this way.”

The newborn’s unusual name is inspired by a Home and Away character.
