Relaxing sitar music could be heard welcoming visitors to an annual event at the Barking Learning Centre on Saturday.

Nearly 200 people listened to talented musician Jonathan Mayer as they explored stalls featuring tarot card reading and astrologers alongside massage and yoga workshops.

Librarian Alka Laphigra, 54, helped organise the day and said the musical welcome was a hit with the public.

“He was absolutely beautiful,” she said. “People wanted to know more about the instrument.”

Alka also ran a jewellery stall at the event.

She said the day was designed to show people ways to take care of both their physical and spiritual wellbeing.

“The atmosphere was very good,” she said. “Everybody loved the stall holders.

“It offered a different prospect to people.

“Rather than just going to the doctor, it let them know what is out there for alternative therapy and how it can support you.”
