Dame Vera Lynn, who was born in East Ham and lived in Barking, has turned 100 today.

• The Russian Revolution took place.

• A litre of fuel was 4p, which in today’s money is £3.08.

• Winston Churchill was appointed Minister of Munitions.

• It took five days to get from London to New York and three and a half months to travel from London to Australia.

• New York State allowed women to vote on November, 6.

• A Boeing aircraft flew for the first time on June 15.

• America paid Denmark $25 million for the Virgin Islands.

• British battleship HMS Vanguard explodes at Scapa Flow, killing 804 on July 9.

• Hit song, Over There by Nora Bayes, was released before going on to be the most popular song in the First World War

• The Ford Model T was the most popular car in 1917.

• Cleopatra was the best selling film that year.
