Jon Cruddas held a rally on Saturday to build the momentum in his campaign against a prison being built at Beam Reach in Dagenham.

The Ministry of Justice has its eye on the site for a 2000-inmate prison, but last week The Post revealed that the Mayor’s Office are less eager after taking into account public opinion.

The Barking and Dagenham MP said his rally, held at Rainham Village Primary School, went well.

He said: “This is the first of many and thousands are already involved. I will be calling debates in parliament, more local events and building a long term campaign, as I don’t think the issue will go away soon.”
