Volunteers were given a pat on the back by Jon Cruddas for spending their spare time making the community a better place to live.

The Dagenham and Rainham MP hosted a breakfast on Friday (12) to thank his volunteer network which has over the last year increased to more than 1,500 residents.

He said: “The main aim of the volunteer network is to have a volunteer on every street in order to help vulnerable members of the community and close the gaps that the government’s spending cuts are creating.

“It is encouraging to see so many local residents getting involved, providing an early warning system that can help bring local issues to the attention of politicians, local authorities and voluntary groups.”

Throughout the year Jon’s volunteers have been involved in many activities including campaigns to save Dagenham police station and to oppose the Beam prison proposals.
