POLICE in Abbey Ward have made 19 arrests as part of a clampdown on the sex trade in Barking.

Kerb-crawlers were targeted over the two-night operation in which undercover officers were used to bait the would-be clients.

The move comes in response to residents' concerns about prostitutes and kerb-crawlers in the Tanner Street area, and is part of the police's long-running fight against sleaze late at night.

Sgt Richard Morgan, who led the operation, said: "We have been actively trying to halt prostitution and kerb-crawling in this area for about a year and a half now.

"We are tackling the problem in numerous different ways, and hope that we can slowly remove the trade altogether.

"In the latest initiative we arrested 19 kerb-crawlers and bailed one man after he was found with drugs."
