Four tiny kittens have been rescued from being trapped inside an abandoned cat carrier that was hidden in a hedge in Barking Park.

They were discovered by a someone walking in the park last week who heard their cries and found them starving, dehydrated and covered in fleas.

Staff at the Goddard Veterinary Group in Barking are now caring for the kittens and hoping to find them new homes.

Vet Dominique Vanthournout said: “The kittens are about 12 weeks old and beautiful. When they were first brought to us they were distressed having been left without food and water throughout the hot weather. They were also covered in fleas.

“Our vet nurse Jo and our veterinary care assistant Samara have been caring for them round the clock since they arrived and we’ve also given them a full health check.”

She warned people not to abandon pets but to contact rescue charities if they were having problems caring for them.

“There is help available and animals shouldn’t be left to suffer in this way. These four are lucky because they were found in the nick of time,” she added.
