All council tenants will be allowed to keep dogs under newly-agreed measures – providing that they sign up to the borough’s pioneering dog poo DNA scheme.
Cabinet members rolled through a raft of changes affecting tenancy conditions at a meeting on Wednesday last week, including policies on pets.
Currently only tenants in houses and ground-floor flats are allowed to keep pooches but a six-week consultation was launched on Monday to open dog-ownership up to all tenants registering with the council.
Council leader Cllr Darren Rodwell said the move brought the council’s policy “up to the 21st century”.
He said: “This decision will liberate council tenant dog lovers and commits them to being a considerate dog owner.”
The council launched its DNA pilot scheme – the first of its kind in the country – in January in Abbey, Mayesbrook and Longbridge wards.
Free for the first 1,000 registrations, owners have to register their canines with animal DNA specialist PooPrints.
