Activists join street demonstrations in Dagenham

Far-right activists staged a street protest in a renewed attempt to stop the opening of a mosque on Saturday.

Around 125 people joined the English Defence League protest with 25 members of Unite Against Fascism mounting a counter demonstration in Green Lane, Dagenham.

Some 100 police officers oversaw the protests and no arrests were made.

Borough Commander Ch Supt Matt Bell said: “The demonstration passed swiftly and peacefully with campaigners demonstrating and leaving the area in an orderly manner.”
