Barking and Dagenham residents have voted no to adopting the Alternative Voting system.
In the country’s first referendum since 1975 the new voting system was rejected in the borough by over two-thirds of voters.
Voters were asked if they wanted the old parliamentary voting system of first past the post to be replaced by the alternative vote system in yesterday’s referendum, for which there was a 27.8 per cent turnout.
Overall 22, 338 of the 31,885 votes cast opted to stick with the First-Past-The-Post system.
Votes were counted at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre, Ripple Road, Dagenham this afternoon.
