Barking Station’s forecourt will receive a facelift this summer to make it more pleasant for pedestrians and public transport passengers.
The work, costing around 1milllion, will nearly double the amount of public space in front of the building in Station Parade and improve bus stops, taxi pick up points and cycle parking. The bus lay-by will be moved further away from the building and the bulk of the taxi waiting area will be relocated to Wakering Road.
The forecourt area will be de-cluttered and a new high-quality granite pavement will be laid along with new street furniture, signs, seating, lighting, bicycle parking.
A second phase, which would see the pavement area opposite the station improved, is dependent on extra funding being secured.
Cllr Mick McCarthy, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “By increasing the paved area and moving the bus stop further away from the building we will be able to reduce congestion and overcrowding – especially during busy periods.”
