A flag was hoisted above the Town Hall this morning to celebrate Commonwealth Day.

The ceremony at 10.30am joined one of countless others across six continents aimed at reaffirming common values and cooperation in the former British Empire.

“Today is a great opportunity to celebrate our diversity, unity and values that define not just the Commonwealth but the many residents of Barking and Dagenham,” said deputy council leader Saima Ashraf in a speech.

“In line with this year’s theme, Towards a Common Future, ties in fully with our vision here in Barking and Dagenham that no one should be left behind.

“We will continue to ensure that every resident is treated fairly, feels safe and is able to prosper.”

People in 53 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe recognise the annual event.

Leaders of Commonwealth member states will meet in London next month.
