Angry motorists turned out in force to protest against the introduction of parking zones in Barking and Dagenham.

Up to 200 people took part in the peaceful march between Greatfields Park in Movers Lane, Barking, and Barking Town Hall on the Town Square on Saturday.

The demonstration came after an online poll conducted by the Post this month indicated that nine in 10 people felt they had not been properly consulted on the introduction of Controlled Parking Zones.

Motorists have branded CPZs a money-making scheme after it emerged revised parking fees based on car CO2 emissions could increase by up to 100 per cent, while drivers who had not paid for parking last year could end up forking out 100 for two medium-size cars.

Barking and Dagenham Council has postponed the launch of several CPZs after households organised several petitions in their streets.

Rally organiser Lucille Bowden said the march had gone well while participant Peter Brown added it had been well marshalled.

Mr Brown, 54, of Becontree Avenue, Dagenham, said: “I went along to offer my support. It’s a stealth tax. Why should you be charged to park outside your front door when you pay your road tax?”
