New powers could be introduced to tackle anti-social behaviour around Dagenham Heathway following a public consultation.

The order could mean fixed penalty notices are handed out on the spot and can be issued for offences including drinking alcohol in public, spitting or urinating. The maximum fine for preaching the PSPO is £1,000 with the possibility of being given a Criminal Behaviour Order.

Similar PSPOs have already been introduced in Barking town centre and in the Broad Street area in Dagenham.

The council held a public consultation on the matter. In total 627 people responded, with 97 per cent of respondents being in favour of new powers being implemented.

Jonathon Toy, operational director for enforcement services, said: “While it won’t solve all the problems, it will certainly give us the power to clamp down on the few individuals who cause misery for the majority of law abiding residents.”
