Officers were called to Valentines Way at around 6.45am to reports of a disturbance at a house, and were informed a short while later of a fire at the same address.

Emergency services attended and found the body of a woman, believed to be in her early 50s, inside.

The woman, named locally as Karen and believed to be a mum of three, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 50-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and currently remains in custody at an east London police station.

Neighbours told how they “woke up to the sound of sirens”, with another saying: “It was like World War Three with all the people in suits running around.

“I couldn’t see or smell any smoke but there were firefighters and police everywhere.”
