COMPETE TENNIS star Marie Ba continued her excellent season by reaching the main draw of the AEGON Junior under-14 international event in Wrexham.

The youngster made her way through qualifying by beating Chloe Land and Anna Brogan to reach the main draw, where she knocked out fellow qualifier Jennifer Brown 6-7, 6-3, 6-1.

That victory meant a match with second seed Tatjana Vorobjova, but the Estonian proved too strong in their clash.

There were some disappointments for Compete, who train at the Redbridge Sports Centre, as Shannon Newnes and Sian Green, ranked one and two in qualifying, both failed to make the main draw.

The duo combined in the doubles event though and knocked out Kathryn Hughes and Ceire Mullins, before securing a walkover against top seeds Lidia Usinger and Vorobjova to reach the semi-finals, where their opponents are yet to be decided.

In the boys event, Oliver Bickley beat Jonathan Gray 6-4, 6-2, before easing past Matthew Kamal 6-1, 6-1 in qualifying.

He was defeated in the first round of the main draw though, losing 6-2, 6-3 to fourth seed Maximilien Blancaneaux from France.

Jared Linzell and Lewis Thompson failed to make it through qualifying, while Bickley combined with Yosuke Higashi in the doubles, but they lost to Italian pairing Edoardo Lamberti and Niccolo Lardi.

Hainault's Marshall Tutu also enjoyed a fine week, making the final of his under-18 Series Indoor event.
