Cllr Abdul Aziz was joined by his wife and consort, Najma Aziz, at the Green Lane, Dagenham store.

The pair spent time chatting with staff and volunteers at the shop, which has been open for 15 years, with Mrs Aziz pledging to return as a volunteer when the mayoral year ends.

Cllr Aziz said: “I’ve really enjoyed coming here today and meeting the staff and volunteers who do such amazing work.

“It is wonderful to have store like this in the community as it not only helps the hospice but it enables people to buy clothing or items at such affordable prices.”

Director of retail Michelle Nicholls said: “Retail is one of Saint Francis Hospice’s strong sources of income generation and in the last couple of years it has gone from strength to strength.”
