Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has added an extra £1million to the London Borough of Culture award’s prize pot.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has added an extra £1 million to the London Borough of Culture award’s prize pot.
The initiative, launched in June, will now see £1.35 million go to each of the two winning boroughs, to help them fund a programme of cultural events and projects.
Newham, Tower Hamlets and Barking and Dagenham are among the 22 boroughs who’ve applied for the award, which will announce the winners for 2019 and 2020 on February 27.
Mr Khan said: “Despite London’s position as the world’s culture capital, too many young Londoners do not have access to the city’s exceptional cultural institutions and don’t get involved in cultural projects.”
He said the programme will help unlock young Londoners’ creative potential and inspire the next generation of artists.
Barking and Dagenham launched their campaign with a conga procession led by council leader Daren Rodwell in November, while actress Dame Helen Mirren voiced her support for the Tower Hamlets bid. Newham placed their bid in September.
