THE tragic death of a brave police officer who died in the line of duty will be commemorated by a stone memorial.
Newham Council have granted planning permission for the tribute to PC Gary Toms who was fatally injured during a police chase in Newham on April 11 last year.
PC Toms, who served in Barking and Dagenham Police before he joined New Scotland Yard's CO19 firearms unit, suffered serious head injuries when he tried to confront suspected robbers.
The 37-year-old's life support machine was switched off on April 17 last year.
The Police Memorial Trust has proposed the memorial - just under a metre high - to be erected on a for a piece of unregistered land in Ashlin Road, which is close to the spot where PC Toms was injured.
