AN AWARD-WINNING foster carer is making Christmas extra special for deserving youngsters this year.

Mary Moodie, a fosterer with Barking and Dagenham Council, has made 50 hampers full of goodies for young people in the borough who may not receive any presents this year.

And they were handed over to the lucky 50 at a ceremony at the Civic Centre, Dagenham, last week.

Mary, said: "Hopefully, my Secret Santaz hampers will give these young people an extra special Christmas and put a smile on their faces."

This is the fourth year Mary has run the project, and she makes all the hampers herself at home in Forest Gate, has grown.

She said: "I've spent the last 12 months raising cash to buy the gifts, and I'll start the whole process again in January."

The 52-year-old - who has fostered an estimated 200 children since 1995 - was presented with a Parental Peace Award by Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, for her Secret Santaz work.
