FOREIGN Secretary David Miliband hit the European election trail in a bid to stop the BNP "politics of hate" in Barking and Dagenham.

He joined Labour MEP Claude Moraes and Barking MP Margaret Hodge, pressing ahead with her crusade to stem the threat of the far-right party in her constituency on Friday.

Mr Miliband told the Recorder: "The people of Barking need a fair deal. That's what Labour offers, not the politics of hate which will do nothing to improve life in Margaret Hodge's constituency."

But Barking and Dagenham BNP leader, Cllr, Bob Bailey, who is standing in the Euro-elections, said: "Labour have got nothing new to offer the people of Barking and Dagenham, where we have got a housing crisis, people are being put out of work and undercut by cheap foreign Labour and now a prison is being dumped on us.
