More than 120 locals bagged jobs thanks to council joint venture in Barking and Dagenham

More than a hundred new jobs were created for local residents over a year thanks to a joint initiative.

Elevate East London, a joint venture between Barking and Dagenham Council and private services company Agilisys, based out of the Barking Enterprise Centre, helped more 123 residents from the borough into employment over the year to March 2013.

Yemisi Fasanya was struggling to find work before being referred to Elevate’s job brokerage scheme by the job centre.

With the team’s help she gained skills and training which led to a volunteering role and then an apprenticeship.

“I am really grateful for the work Elevate put in to support me,” she said.

“I don’t think I would have had the confidence to do well at interview nor been able to access skills development which has helped me gain this fantastic apprenticeship position.”

In total 170 jobs were found with 47 going to those outside the borough.

Elevate exceeded its council-set target of jobs for local people by 12 per cent.
