Washing machines are a hard-working household appliance that can get dirty over time if care isn't taken.

Due to the heat generated by washing cycles, it creates moist conditions that are ideal for mould growth.

This can particularly be a problem around the rubber door seal, and it can accumulate quickly.

If this isn't addressed, then clothes will end up having a musty smell to them after a wash.

However, there are a couple of household items you can use if you want to prevent mould and keep your washing machine smelling fresh.

How to keep washing machine clean using two household items

Chantel Mila, who goes by @mama_mila_ on TikTok, runs a home tips page and has shared some advice for cleaning the washing machine.

In the caption of her video, she wrote: "When was the last time you deep cleaned your washing machine?

"If your clothes are smelling musty, your washing machine may be the culprit! This method is so easy to do and leaves your clothes smelling so fresh."

The two household items that will make a difference to your washing machine are white vinegar and tea tree or clove oil.

Chantel recommends mixing one cup of white vinegar and 20 drops of tea tree or clove oil into a bowl and soaking some cloths in the liquid.

Place these cloths around the washing machine seal and allow them to soak for a little while.

While you wait, you can empty your drain pump and clear your filter to make sure everything is optimised.

Additionally, you can remove your detergent tray and soak it in hot water to remove any build-up of materials.

After a short while, you can use the cloths that have been soaking on the rubber seal to wipe down the area and clean up any mould or grime that might be there.

Alongside this, the tea tree or clove oil should add a pleasant smell to the area.

Finally, run the washing machine with one cup of white vinegar poured into the detergent tray to leave the drum clean and shiny.
