Members of a new social club picked up life-saving skills as they took part in a first aid session.

The group, called Butterflies, received tips on how to help someone in an emergency at the Fanshawe Community Centre, in Barmead Road, Dagenham.

The session was run by volunteers from The U, a nationwide venture which organises for people in the community to share their knowledge and talents in a fun and informal way – hence the fancy dress.

Launched last week, Butterflies is a social club giving people the chance to chat over a cup of tea and make new friends.

Organiser Jeanette Montgomery hopes to introduce outings, such as cinema and theatre trips, in the future.

She said: “I wanted to start a club that was not a dating club, but an opportunity to get to know others in the area.”

The group meets at the Fanshawe Centre every Tuesday from 10am to noon.

Although there are no age restrictions, it is aimed at men and women over 40.

For more information call Jeanette on 07946 352305.
