Newham Swords Fencing Club made history last weekend when two of their fencers were selected to represent Team GB at the European Championships.

Alex Savin, 15, and Ife Kubler, 14, are the first fencers in Newham's history to compete for Great Britain.

The teenage pairing will participate in the under-17 European Champion-ships, taking place in Athens between March 1-8.

Savin and Kubler are now ranked third and fourth respectively in the GB under-17 rankings, which has been achieved through success at home and international competitions this season.

Their coaches, Linda Strachan and Pierre Harper, will also be travelling to Athens as the GB team manager and head coach.

"I am over the moon with their selection," said club manager and former Olympic fencer, Strachan.

"To have two fencers from the same club represent GB at a major event is some achievement."

Savin and Kubler are now concentrating on the remaining under-17 internationals taking place in January and February, in an effort to qualify for the Cadet World Championships, which take place in April.
