One young girl’s nasty habit of binge drinking spirits nearly destroyed her life – until an intervention by Subwize.
The 18-year-old, who asked to remain anonymous, said she began drinking to socialise but things got out of hand.
“I was 14 or 15 and I was buying brandy from the shops and drinking half of it in a day,” she said.
“Looking back, it was irresponsible of them to serve me – but the real problem was that I didn’t take my life seriously enough.
“Subwize helped me take responsibility for myself.”
She was helped with an apprenticeship, taught interview techniques and shown how to write a personal statement – but what she most appreciated was having someone to talk to.
“They won my trust,” she said. “They became my friends. They built up my confidence, they taught me self-reliance.
“They treated me with respect – and after a few years I had totally recovered. It’s really scary thinking where I would have ended up if they hadn’t helped me.”
So inspired was she by the team at Subwize, she now intends to become a support worker herself.
“I’ve been through it myself, so now I want to help people on the wrong path,” she said.
