CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a massive prison in Dagenham were given another blow as residents overwhelmingly rejected the idea.
Last April, the Ministry of Justice announced plans to build a category B prison for 1,500 inmates on the former Ford site in Beam Reach, South Dagenham East.
Now Dagenham MP Jon Cruddas and council leader Liam Smith have handed a petition with the signatures of 15,000 residents opposed to the plans, to prime minister Gordon Brown.
Last week they wrote to justice secretary Jack Straw, asking him to dump the plans, as the initial consultation results have come to light.
