HEAR YE HEAR YE! The olde town cryer was in Barking last week to encourage shop-owners to enter the business awards.

Dressed in the traditional 18th century garments of a red and gold robe, white breeches and a tri-corner hat the crier delivered his message to the people.

The closing date for the Barking and Dagenham business awards is 5pm on Thursday May 1 and the organisation behind the scheme, Barking and Dagenham Enterprise, want as many companies as possible to enter.

Town crier Alan Myatt, whose extraordinary voice holds the Guinness Book Records title for loudest "Oyez", toured Barking Town centre on Thursday to drum up business.

The first-ever business awards in the borough, is aimed at raising the profile of local businesses as well offering a top prize of £3,000 to the winning entry.

The Awards are open to every business trading in the borough and free to enter by going online to www.boldanddynamic.co.uk.

The Award categories are: Best New Business, Retailer of the Year, Innovation, Growth Business of the Year, Business Person of the Year, Marketing Excellence, Training and Development and Business of the Year.

The overall winner will be selected from these seven categories.

There will also be a Gala awards ceremony and dinner at Castle Green, Dagenham on Tuesday July 8.
