WEST HAM Academy goalkeeper Deniz Mehmet suffered the heartbreak of elimination from the FIFA under-17s World Cup with a penalty shoot-out defeat against Colombia in the quarter-finals.
With his native Turkey having already beaten Burkino Faso (1-0) and Costa Rica (4-1), as well as drawing 1-1 with New Zealand in the group stages, they booked a place in the quarter-finals thanks to a 2-0 win over the United Arab Emirates.
However, the last-eight clash with Colombia had a sting in its tail as Turkey led 1-0 for an hour before the South Americans grabbed a last-minute equaliser and then won the shoot-out by 5-3.
