Around 3,000 people flocked to Valence House yesterday for a free community fun day that was arranged as part of the council’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Guests were treated to activities including a penalty shoot out, zorbing and arts and crafts.

A 60-strong community choir, whose youngest singer is just five-year-old, treated guests to traditional and modern tunes.

Visitors were even recruited to make bunting for One Borough Bunting, a council project which asks people to make bunting that will be used to decorate anniversary events.

The day was organised by Lifelife, which equips people for life and work, delivering services that recognise the importance of the person, family and community,

“We were overwhelmed by the numbers of people from the community that poured in,” said Elspeth Paisley,” event organiser for Lifeline.

“It was much bigger and better than last year and tripled in size.

“It is evidence that people do still value and care about the community and that people want to come together.”
