A BASEBALL bat wielding thug unsuccessfully tried to rob a cash in transit van in Chadwell Heath last week.

The would-be robber sprang on the guard in an attempt to steal his cash box in Sainsbury's car park, High Road, on Friday September 18.

Having failed, he jumped into a waiting silver Vauxhall Astra and sped off via Reynolds Avenue.

The guard, who was not injured in the fracas, described the thug as a white man wearing a hooded top.

Police were called to the scene of the attempted robbery at 11.30am last Friday.

The Flying Squad in Barking is now investigating. There have been no arrests at this stage.
