The most popular names given to baby boys and girls last year in East London suggests that where you live could influence what name you choose for your child.

According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), in Barking and Dagenham the most popular name given to baby girls last year was Amelia and for boy names it was Muhammad.

Last year there were 679,106 live births recorded in England and Wales and 3,870 of these babies were born in Barking and Dagenham.

Since there are so many different names given to babies, even the most popular names are only given to a relatively small proportion of all babies named overall.

In Barking and Dagenham 37 baby boys were named Muhammad and 29 baby girls were named Amelia.

Nationally, the top three boys in 2017 were Oliver, Harry and George, while the top three girls were Olivia, Amelia and Isla.

Muhammad makes up the highest proportion of names given to boys in any local area and was the highest ranked boys’ name in 35 local authorities.

However, Muhammad is only the 10th most popular names in England and Wales overall which suggests that its popularity is specific to certain areas.

Maryam is the most widespread less popular name, however it’s also ranked first in five local authorities - Tower Hamlets, Newham, Redbridge, Luton and Leicester.

It’s an Aramaic form of the name Miriam, or Mary and is closely linked to Christianity and Islam.

Analysis suggest that boys’ names vary less, with there being a narrower selection of names despite there being 17,000 more boys than girls in 2017.
