Gaelle Paul, 42, grew up down the road from Bobby Moore’s parents, but now she’s the LA-based stylist to singer Adele. She tells Anna Silverman about her journey from Barking to Los Angeles.

I’ve worked with Gwyneth Paltrow, J-Lo and currently style Adele, but I never planned to be a stylist to the stars, it just happened.

We moved to Barking when I was a baby and lived on Waverley Gardens, a few doors down from Bobby Moore’s parents.

I went to Manchester poly then drifted around office jobs for a few years, not knowing what I wanted to do.

It made me realise what a significant chunk of your life a job takes up so I thought I’d try something fun in fashion or music.

I was offered an internship at Marie Claire - the first magazine I rang - and went from there to the Observer where I ended up as deputy fashion editor.

There were no celebrities back then, the celeb thing hadn’t kicked off yet, Instead it was all about models on the front covers.

I was at Marie Claire when they put Monica Lewinski on the front cover in 1999, that was a big break-through at the time. We all hated it, but I suppose, no one likes a change.

I gradually went from styling models to celebrities for magazine shoots.

With models you just sent the clothes to be shot somewhere but with celebrities you have to involve publicists and image consultants.

When I was reporting on menswear shows I met my American husband on a train from Paris to Milan. He was a fashion model.

We moved to LA in 2006 because I knew I’d be able to get work with celebrities there, I was right. I’ve worked with a fair few, starting with Natalie Imbruglia.

Out of everyone I thought J-LO was especially brilliant. She was still always excited about the clothes and took direction well. Khloe Kardashian was great too.

Before Adele I was just styling people for magazine shoots but with her I do everything. Everyday she works basically.

For events I have to figure out how many outfits she’ll need, then I reach out to designers with a brief, show Adele and see what she thinks and she’ll get the final say. Everything she wears in public has been designed specifically for her. Designers are begging to dress her.

I did her for the Oscars, the Grammys, the Brits and when she collected her MBE, to name a few.

We don’t actually need to see each other much, she lives in London so I’ll just see her for photoshoots but the rest can be done online or over the phone.

One of my favourites has to be when she won the six Grammy’s in 2011.

She’s in the dark blue Burberry dress holding all the awards.

At the events I’m with her the whole time helping her change outfits, I leave her right before she goes on the red carpet.
