Former Barking Abbey pupil and mum-of-four Feyi Jegede, 38, talks to Phoebe Cooke about how her love of fitness enabled her to get back on her feet
“I couldn’t believe it when I got to make my own fitness DVD – for free!
“I was exercising to help keep positive when I was unemployed and my sister suggested I post my exercises on YouTube.
“I started posting short videos on Facebook as well and getting a really good response.
“Earlier this year I decided to contact production companies and one [New Shoot Pictures] offered to make a fitness video with me demonstrating my routines for free.
“It took about two months to film and it was so much fun. I’ve made it time-friendly so it’s good for mums.
“I’ve always loved fitness – I’m very sporty. I had been teaching kids football and dancing at children’s centres in Barking and Dagenham but couldn’t come up with my rent in Grays.
“I’d been struggling even though it was going well, I just didn’t have quite enough money. I could have worked more but I wanted to spend time with my children.
“We had to live in a hostel for six months before getting a more permanent home. I was scared – it didn’t seem like my life was going the way I’d planned.
“I’d been on maternity leave with my third child [Cherish, now six]when my husband walked out on me.
“I was in total shock, I didn’t see any signs. I was devastated, but I had three small children so I had to pull myself together.
“I’m hoping people will watch the video and want to work with me to make more DVDs or work as a fitness trainer on a similar platform.
“It’s been a dream of mine but I didn’t think it could happen.
“From now on, I’m going to seize every opportunity that comes my way.”
