Plans to build 13 pre-fab council homes in 60 weeks have been given the green light.
Barking and Dagenham Council’s planning chiefs approved the development which will see a series of council flats rise from three to four storeys on a former garages site in Sugden Way, Barking.
Architects astudio expect the modular homes to cut a traditional building time of 24 to 30 months down to 60 weeks.
Its boss, Richard Hyams, said: “Securing planning permission marks a milestone in a four-year journey to prove there is a better way to build affordable homes.
“To get the go ahead for a project of this scale tells us that planners recognise the value our approach can bring to a community.”
The development uses a volumetric modular construction technique where bits of buildings are manufactured by the firm, Rollalong, offsite before being stuck together on site.
Council regeneration company, Be First, teamed up with astudio for the project.
