The boss of rail operator c2c has apologised after commuters suffered disruption for two consecutive rush hours.

Passengers faced delays and cancellations on the route yesterday evening and again this morning.

In a statement, c2c managing director Julian Drury and Network Rail’s Anglia managing director Meliha Duymaz attributed the disruption to “severe damage to the overhead wires”.

It went on: “Yesterday evening only two out of four platforms at Fenchurch Street were available, which meant we could only run a reduced train service during the evening peak.

“Engineers worked tirelessly to fix the damage through the night, but this morning no services could run between Barking and Fenchurch Street until repairs were completed at 07.30 and knock-on delays continued throughout the morning peak.

“There was also further disruption yesterday afternoon following a separate problem with the overhead wires near Grays.

“We are now carrying investigations to identify the causes so we can avoid any repeat of these issues in the future.”
