CHINA, 208AD. The Han Dynasty is nearing its end and shrewd Prime Minister Cao Cao convinces Emperor Han to declare war on the kingdoms of Xu in the west and East Wu in the south.

Cao Cao claims that his intention is to unify China for the good of the Han Empire, but his motivations are more self-serving.

Director John Woo's RED CLIFF (15) is based on a legendary battle, which was immortalised in the novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Although written 700 years ago, the novel is still widely read all over Asia, and has spawned more than a dozen videogames and numerous comic books.

Woo says he had been attracted to the story for more than 20 years, but it is only now that technology and the market can support a film of this scale and magnitude.
