LETTERS of thanks have been sent to residents from the council for their recycling efforts, as the authority met its targets for the year.

Cllr Milton McKenzie, who is a member of the East London Waste Authority and executive member for sustainability, thanked residents for helping to recycle almost a quarter of their waste.

The council target for recycling and composting of waste, which is set out in the Local Area Agreement, is 23.5 percent.

This year, the council managed to recycle 23.99 percent, and is hoping to hit the 25 percent mark in 2009.
