A march and rally is being held tomorrow to protest the closure of King George Hospital’s A&E.

MPs, councillors and campaigners will be meeting at Dagenham Central Park, off Rainham Road North, Dagenham, at 11.30am, before walking to Queen’s Hospital in Romford.

From there the group will march to Redbridge Town Hall, in High Road, Ilford, for 3pm, where there will be a rally with speeches from local MPs and the leaders of Redbridge and Barking and Dagenham Councils.

If you cannot manage the walk the number 128 bus runs from Queen’s Hospital to Ilford town centre.

The campaigners are protesting against the closure of Redbridge’s only emergency department, at the hospital in Barley Lane, Goodmayes.

Slated for closure for more than 10 years, the date of 2019 was given last autumn for when the A&E will downgrade to a 24 hour urgent care centre.

The campaign has cross party support, and in March the chief executive of Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT), Matthew Hopkins, hinted that the proposals may not go ahead.

“There are still a lot decisions to be made,” he said at the time.

During the general election health secretary Jeremy Hunt stated that the emergency deparment “would not be closing any time soon”.

The Save King George A&E campaign, spearheaded by the relentless Andy Walker, is hoping Mr Hunt makes the decision official.
